APTN: Inotsiavik Centre in Labrador wins $1M Arctic Inspiration Prize

An Inuit cultural project based in northern Labrador walked away with this year’s $1 million Arctic Inspiration Prize (AIP). The AIP provides money for northern innovation projects with a focus on education, health and wellbeing, culture, arts and language, science and traditional knowledge, climate change and the economy.

A group of youth in Hopedale in northern Labrador have won $1 million to build their dream of an Inuit cultural centre in their home community, marking the first Nunatsiavut project to win the top Arctic Inspiration Prize.

Inotsiavik provides language and culture programming for Inuit in Nunatsiavut in person and online. This looks like language lessons by Inuit instructors, sewing circles and courses, in person elders gatherings, land based activities and culture skills workshops such as animal skinning and cleaning and traditional tool making (uluit, Kullet for example). We go by what programming our Inuit community members would like to see and listen to their feedback.
